For me, it suffices to say that due to the lack of diversity in Silicon Valley, I’m no big fan of social media. Nonetheless, one can’t help but notice our government’s increasing desire to vigorously regulate social media using political misinformation, teenage addiction to social media, hate speech, bullying, and other social perils as its premise to do so. In contrast, it doesn’t seem that government is too enthusiastic about regulating the news industry, particularly against abuses carried out under the auspices of investigative journalism and freedom of the press. What’s more disturbing is that government appears either dismissive — or — have lost the political will to pursue viable oversight programs [such as the 2014 CIN Study it abandoned as a result of news media pressures], that would’ve provided the public with valuable insight into how the news industry gather, disseminate, and report the news fairly and objectively in accordance to the demographics it serves. As shown via this video, a professor at the American University gives a sarcastic opinion about what role the government ought to play when dealing with the news industry. And lastly, the news industry is just as guilty as social media facilitating hate speech, bullying, and other social perils, so why not tighten a regulatory noose around its neck too.
“Our liberty depends on the freedom of the press, and that cannot be limited without being lost” — Thomas Jefferson
