We had an old saying in the U.S. Navy for leaders who wouldn’t hold the line by bowing down to lawlessness, unethical practices, or unpopular orders. The saying was, “Bend over, I’m driving!” Particularly when the adage applied to indecisive decision-making or unpopular orders abruptly passed down by senior brass for subordinates to follow, those orders were metaphorically equivalent to sailors assuming a tabletop position (on all fours) and then involuntarily having the dongs of their immediate supervisors violently shoved in and out of their anuses to coerce compliance with the orders.
Needless to say, it was especially embarrassing for the immediate supervisor(s) who had to enforce the order(s) in that junior sailors viewed them as spineless puppets who’d do anything to be promoted to the next higher pay grade. Money and individual power were often at the crux of young sailors getting screwed by senior leadership. Perhaps the adage could be applied to how President Donald J. Trump has been treating America’s BIG law firms. Particularly, they are retreating to hundreds of millions of dollars in pro bono services in order to stroke the president’s ego and possibly evade the madness and wrath of his anger aimed at the broader legal community.

Former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder urged big law firms to “stand fast,” to hold the line against President Trump’s unethical executive orders by suing his administration, and that those law firms will “likely to win, and that you will not suffer any consequence as a result of your opposition.”
