Not until Black journalism in America is totally independent of White America’s mainstream media will Black news anchors possess the freedom to uninhibitedly speak on Black-related issues without fear of the media’s retribution. Unburdened by the media’s political and culturally tailored broadcast strategies, Black anchors could confidently and comfortably cover news stories originating from Black ghettos to those spawned by Black professionals on Wall Street. America’s government and media need to be more candid about the constraints placed on the Black narrative and get out of the way of the kind of journalism that’s critical to America’s broader Black community. The powers that be are doing America a grave disservice by keeping national broadcasting strategies pertaining to culture as they are. To a notable degree, the broadcasting strategies of America’s media whitewash the remnants of slavery, where enslaved Africans were denied the right to read or be adequately informed about important events in their communities. The purging of powerful Black news anchors who were courageous enough to speak on unpopular Black-related issues is a testament to this claim.
Merely a pipe dream at this juncture—of course it’s not a real news network that could compete with America’s mainstream media right now. However, one has to admit it’s one hell of a business name for a fully Black-owned and operated national news network. “BN3” is highly creative. You can either condemn or denigrate the founder of this idea. Nonetheless, America’s government, the media, professional journalists, and news analysts alike know that it’s a relatively fair argument to entertain.
