Perhaps the old magic of “Love Jones” is gone.
“Black American culture is dying. Ghetto blacks are to blame.”
But what about the media’s role in delegitimizing and marginalizing Black American culture? African Americans’ fight for equity, equality, and authenticated “Negro citizenship” as opposed to second-class citizenship has been a struggle both during and after slavery in America. Historically, the media has been complicit in creating a stigma around Black culture that has diminished its esteem. Deceptive news reporting, prejudiced content, and the disproportionate broadcasting of negative news stories relative to the culture’s population size. The media has played a major role in tearing down Black culture. However, Black culture has contributed significantly to its own demise by losing sight of the things that have defined its moral strengths.
