Unless there are hundreds of millions of ordinary eyes, mouths, and ears monitoring and [censuring] the news at any given time, the result is an emboldened news industry that doesn’t give a rat’s booty what the average Joe Blow thinks. The industry will intrude on personal lives as it sees fit. It will control narratives for the benefit of its mere existence. And it will keep the fear of God in politicians and people with any authority or influence in a modern, thriving society. The latter includes sports figures, social commentators, and entertainers of all sorts.
