Perhaps the numbers in the video that follows are anachronistic, but Dr. Kunjufu’s message is a timeless one in that “we need more black male role models that will encourage our youth in math and science.” Black men, we have a strong presence in sports and entertainment but are not limited by those attributes alone. Let’s get behind our sons and show them more of the Silas Adekunle’s of the world.
Intuitively, it makes sense to believe that — as opposed to owning too many shiny objects [i.e., jewelry, cars, boats, planes, etc.], learning initiatives like “The Hidden Genius Project” is where we ought to consider investing our hard-earned dollars. Why? Because we all can’t be sports stars and entertainers. Exhibiting our cultural intelligence on the world stage is critical.
