One of the things that cemented Johnson’s label as “the” most racist president in U.S. history is that he “null and voided wartime orders that granted Blacks forty acres and a mule.” Similar to Johnson’s racist policies and ideas that emboldened the Confederates to institute a series of discriminatory “Black Codes” at constitutional conventions, Donald J. Trump’s anti-DEI racist initiatives and policies have either empowered and/or emboldened government agencies and corporations all across the nation to turn back decades of legislation, programs, and policies that were designed to help mitigate hundreds of years of deeply entrenched racism throughout America’s social structures and political systems.

Hence, Donald Trump does not hold the mantle for being America’s most racist president. That discomfiting honor is often bestowed upon Andrew Johnson, the nation’s 17th president. Trump once alluded to what appears to be a racist gesture about Black professionals in the financial industry by saying, “Black guys counting my money! I hate it. The only kind of people I want counting my money are short guys that wear yarmulkes every day.” Perhaps being a notorious racist will be President Trump’s legacy for Black Americans.
