Unlike the United States, Canada has a law in place that precludes its radio stations and perhaps other forms of news broadcasting platforms from broadcasting false or misleading news. It appears that in 2011, a proposal to amend the law was introduced but was ultimately rescinded due to heavy criticism from Canadian citizens. Hence, the Competition Act, overseen by Canada’s Competition Bureau, contains provisions that address “false or misleading representations and deceptive marketing practices.”
Under “Canada’s Radio Act,” particularly beneath the section “Radio Regulations, 1986 [SOR/86-982] Section 3,” type the key word “misleading” into the search feature, and you should then be able to view the actual statue.
